The Serengeti

A vast, varied ecosystem whose central, northern, western and southern regions each have their own seasonal character.

Introduction

A landscape to read, not rush through.

The Serengeti is not one fixed experience. Choosing the right region matters more than trying to cover it all, and that choice should follow the travel month and your priorities.

Resident predators and plains game make the ecosystem compelling beyond the migration. Staying longer in fewer places generally produces the most satisfying days.

Seasonal guide

When the landscape changes.

Jan – Mar
The southern plains are often chosen for calving-season travel.
Apr – Jun
Herd movement is variable; green landscapes and quieter camps can appeal.
Jul – Oct
Northern and western routing is often considered as herds move through the ecosystem.
Nov – Dec
Seasonal rains influence the herds’ movement back toward the south.

Distances are significant. Regional flights can protect time in the field, while road routes connect naturally with Ngorongoro and other northern parks.
